Assessment Criteria
Every NZDAA examination is assessed against a consistent eight-point framework. Criteria are applied proportionally according to the level being examined — a Foundation-level student is not held to the same standard as an Advanced student, but the same qualities are always considered.
01 — Technique
The accuracy, control, and physical proficiency with which the student executes the movement vocabulary of their chosen style — including alignment, coordination, balance, and spatial awareness.
02 — Artistry
The student's ability to go beyond physical execution and bring genuine artistic quality to their performance — sensitivity to the material, individual expression, and authentic communication through movement.
03 — Musicality
The dancer's relationship with the music — rhythmic accuracy, phrasing, dynamics, and sensitivity to musical mood and structure. Truly listening and responding, not simply counting.
04 — Performance Quality
The overall quality of the student's performance as a complete piece of communication — including energy management, transitions, and sustained commitment from beginning to end.
05 — Stage Presence
The student's ability to command the performance space and hold the attention of the audience with intentionality and clarity of purpose.
06 — Presentation
The care and professionalism with which the student prepares and presents themselves — appropriate attire for the style and level, personal grooming, and the overall impression made entering and exiting the examination space.
07 — Confidence
The student's ease and composure within the examination environment — the ability to continue, recover, and perform with commitment. Nerves are natural and are not penalised.
08 — Overall Achievement
A holistic judgment of the student's achievement across all criteria — reflecting their readiness, preparation, and accomplishment as a dancer at this stage of their development.
